In the late 16^th century, the location where Miami exists today was discovered by Spanish explorers. The Spanish held control of this portion of Florida until the United States acquired Florida from Spain in the 1800s. Juliet Tuttle and William Brickell were among a group of settlers who offered portions of their land as incentive for Henry M Flagler to bring his Florida East Coast Railway to their location, which led to the incorporation of Miami as a city in 1896.

Miami currently has a population of around 460,000 people, having millions of tourists visiting the warm and sunny subtropical city every year.
