Before it was known as Atlanta, the city was called Terminus, because the Western and Atlantic Railroad chose Atlanta as the southern terminus for their railway. In 1845 it was renamed Atlanta, after the Atlantic Railroad. Because of the terminus, Atlanta, quickly became a booming city. So important, in fact, that it’s the only city that was destroyed as an act of war during the civil war by General Sherman, who burned it to the ground. Atlanta’s symbol is thus the Phoenix, as it rebuilt itself from ashes. 

Today, Atlanta has a population of around 486,000 people and the world’s busiest airport, with 107 million people flying through in 2018. Atlanta has a lot of black history, being the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., the first city in the south to elect an African-American mayor, Maynard Jackson in 1973. Atlanta is also the birthplace of Coca-Cola, the Weather Channel, Home Depot, Turner Classic Movies, it is also known as the “Hollywood of the South”. Several movies have been filmed there such as the Fast & Furious series, the Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, Marvel movies, Anchorman 2, Zombieland, Driving Miss Daisy, Selma, and many more. Atlantans are also proud of the 22 mile walking and Biking trail called the BeltlLine that joins the city’s in-town neighborhoods. Hundreds of city dwellers take to the BeltLine for a walk, a run or a bike ride on pretty much any day of the year. It’s also home to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, one of the most modern and unique stadiums in the country. It’s home to the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United as well as many, college bowl games, musical events, and the occasional Super Bowl.
